This tutorial will show you how to add Ubuntu 12.04 to Windows workgroup so that we can share files or other resources between different OS

1.Open a terminal by pressing Ctl+Alt+t or search “terminal” from Dash

2.Run below command to install system-config-samba

sudo apt-get install system-config-samba

3.Launch samba from Dash.

4.In the Samba Server Configuration window, click Preference — Server Settings..

5.Then change the workgroup name and click OK

6.Run below command to restart samba(Or restart your computer)

sudo service smbd restart

7.Done.Now you can browse the workgroup from Nautilus window

Note:You need to add Windows computer name and ip address to your /etc/hosts file ,or you may get error like “Unable to mount location Failed to retrieve share list for server”

sudo gedit /etc/hosts

Thanks for trying to explain this. It’s the second tutorial I went through, still not getting anywhere. Would you mind expanding it a little, so a less experienced Linux user has a chance to get this to work? Sure, I can see all the shared folders on my Windows network. But I cannot access them. Keeps asking for Name, Domain, Password. I have no Domain. What now?

I don’t understand what you mean by ‘You need to add Windows computer name and ip address to your /etc/hosts file ,or you may get error like “Unable to mount location Failed to retrieve share list for server” ‘

    Any help?
